Voices

MAPAs Voices program teaches literacy skills through drama to over 7,500 elementary school students on Maui each school year. Through eight week residencies, students improve their reading comprehension skills while learning the foundations of drama. Professional teaching artists collaborate with the classroom teachers so that each drama lesson is directly linked to classroom curriculum.

What the teachers have to say:
- With the Voices program, the art of story-telling was taken to a whole new level.
- Comprehension scores of the stories they acted out in the Voices program are higher than the stories they do not act out.
- It brought things out of even my quiet students!
- There was a positive impact on my students self-esteem, especially my autistic student and my English-as-a-Second-Language students who got to excel!
- Students grasped concepts being taught because it was hands-on and interactive.
- My students couldnt wait until the teaching artist returned they absolutely loved it!!
- The students loved acting out the stories. Even the parents were talking about it.
- Another great yearkeep Voices coming!
